Week 8 - visit to the Museum of Somerset.

Cherry class had a fantastic trip to the Museum of Somerset in Taunton this week. All 30 children and accompanying adults arrived by coach at 10am in the morning. We then got straight into a talk about life in the Stone Age where children were able to recall their knowledge of the 'Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolothic' eras. They made Stone Age necklaces, went on a tour of the museum and also created a beautiful cave painting which will soon be displayed in our classroom. In the afternoon the children were taught about the Bronze Age and Iron Age: we will be learning more about these ages after half term. The children had the opportunity to dress up, make their own Iron torcs as well as create their own coin (which they now know was not used as money but more of a form of art). Their behaviour, enthusiasm and questions were incredible and we are very proud of them all.

Week 6 - Journey of a Pebble.

Cherry Class continue to enjoy diving into a range of exciting learning opportunities across the curriculum. They have enjoyed hands-on scientific experiments as part of our Soil topic, investigating what soil is made of and discovering its different components. Their curiosity and enthusiasm have made this a particularly engaging unit.

In art, our fossil creations are reaching their final stage. The children have been carefully building up their fossil  sculptures using tin foil and tissue paper and will next develop their skills in painting to add detail and texture to bring them to life. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity and focus shine through.

Cherry Class have also been working hard on their times tables, and it’s been brilliant to see a number of children achieving their Times Tables Awards. Regular practice is really paying off—well done everyone!

We’re continuing to enjoy our class text Journey of a Pebble. The children have been learning and using ambitious vocabulary and are becoming more confident in responding to texts. Their thoughtful discussions and written work have been impressive.

We’d love parents to continue encouraging regular reading and quizzing at home. This helps children build their comprehension skills and work towards earning their Word Count Certificates.

Week 4 - Cave paintings!

Over the last two weeks Cherry class have thoroughly immersed themselves into our 'Through the Ages' topic. We had one of our favourite lessons 'Let's Say...' where we travelled back in time to the Stone Age and 'foraged' for food, found sources of shelter and identified threats and assets including rivers, woolly mammoths and we even spotted another tribe! Our lesson this week was all about cave paintings. The children learnt that cave paintings were a form of communication during the Stone Age. The children listened to the sound of a fire whilst in their caves (under their desks!) and used charcoal to create their own cave drawings. The outcome was fantastic and they were incredibly proud of their achievements.

In P.E the children have really grasped how to control the hockey stick and ball and are dribbling through cones with confidence and accuracy. We have started to look at how to take shots on target. Again, thinking about the accuracy of our shot and considering how much power we need to strike the ball for it to reach our intended target.

I am really impressed with how the children are tackling their times tables. They are making good progress through the levels and I look forward to handing out lots of certificates in the next few weeks!

Great work Cherry class!

Week 2 - welcome back!

Wow! What a fantastic start for the children in Cherry Class. They have been working incredibly hard on forming 3-digit numbers using dienes, digit cards and place value grids. The children have worked collaboratively to create 3 digit numbers for their working partner and have then used different manipulatives to represent these numbers.

We started our history unit 'Through the Ages' by exploring artefacts from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. We discussed the meaning of 'prehistory' and the children made interactive timelines to show the progression from Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic times. We look forward to updating you with our history learning over the next few weeks...it even involves cave painting!
