Maths at Staplegrove Church School

“Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about  understanding.” – William Paul Thurston

At Staplegrove Church School, we aim to develop competent, confident mathematicians who are excited about maths and who have the ability to apply their learning in context. We aim to develop our children’s skills, knowledge and understanding of fluency, reasoning and problem solving alongside their ability to make links between the mathematical concepts and to different situations across the curriculum. To achieve this, we follow the White Rose scheme of work. We use the long-term overviews to guide our teaching and learning, however we may modify our planning to suit the needs of our children and may supplement White Rose with other resources. We follow a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach to ensure children have a full and deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
