Learning updates

Friday 13th February

What a busy last few weeks of half term for Year 4! They have attended a Year 4 sports festival along with over 200 other Year 4 children from schools in Taunton. They developed their skills within net and wall sports and also showed our school values of friendship and respect as they mixed brilliantly with the children from the other schools.

We also had our last Forest School this week. The children learnt about fire safety and then put their skills to the test as we had a fire to pop popcorn over.

We had our Inspire morning this week too! Before the morning, each Year 4 child was partnered with a child from Elm and they asked them what sort of Elmer hand puppet they would like. At our Inspire morning, the children then worked to bring their puppets to life using their sewing skills.

Last week, the wonderful children in Year 4 took part in a nation wide times tables competition and they placed in the top 6% of all schools that took part! This is even more impressive considering they were playing against year 5 and 6 classes as well as year 3 and 4. The year 4 children are brilliant at times tables and this impressive achievement is a reflection of how hard they have been working.

A massive well done to each and every class member who helped us achieve this

Tuesday 10th February

Oak Class had a wonderful forest school session this week. We embraced the changeable weather and built shelters to protect us from the elements. The children learnt how to tie ropes securely using a reef knot and then their shelters were put to the test with a 'rainstorm' from a watering can. I am pleased to say the shelters all stayed standing and protected their inhabitants from the 'rain'.

In the classroom, the children have strengthened their understanding of fractions. They have been adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator,  finding fractions of an amount and also converting fractions to their decimal equivalents. The children are now using these skills to solve mathematical problems. In English, the children have been punctuating speech and learning how to use it purposefully in  a piece of writing. In science, we have moved on to investigate the dangers that animals face from their changing habitats.

Thursday 15th January

Oak class have had a very busy first few weeks of Spring term!

In English, the children have written and published haiku poems about the seasons - these are on display on our cloakroom if you would like to come and see them one day at pick up time. Now the children are learning how to write a quest narrative linked to our new class book ' Varjak Paw' by SF Said.

In maths, the children have already mastered adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator and are now investigating equivalent fractions.

The children really enjoyed their first Forest School lesson on Tuesday afternoon which had a first aid focus. The children learnt how to put someone in the recovery position, how to effectively bandage a wound that is bleeding, how to tie a sling securely and much more.

Friday 10th October

Oak Class had a great time playing inter house hockey matches in PE. The children tried hard to apply the skills we have been developing in PE lessons - dribbling, passing and tackling. There was excellent sportsmanship throughout the matches with children celebrating each others successes. In English, the children recorded themselves reading their persuasive speeches and we will soon e find out who is the most persuasive class member! Oak Class have also been working hard on their times tables and they have completed their first multiplication check of the year.

Friday 26th September

Oak Class are enjoying our new writing unit which is leading to us writing persuasive speeches to share with our class. This week we have been building our persuasive writing skills using conjunctions and emotive language. In maths we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 with increasing accuracy and we have been learning our three times table. In science we have been using data loggers to investigate the volume of sounds and the reasons they get louder and quieter.

Friday 12th September

The children have made a fantastic start to the year and lots of great learning has been taking place in Oak Class. We are enjoying our first class book of the year 'The Queen's Nose' and our daily reading lessons linked to it. In writing, we have been using the idea of wishes from our class book to practise the writing skills of using prepositions, adverbs and adjectives purposefully. We had lots of fun in our first history lesson of the year when we acted out the events that lead up to the Anglo-Saxons arriving in England. The children have been busy in PE learning how to dribble a ball with control and precision in hockey and we had a brilliant swimming lesson on Monday.
